Weymouth renders this verse thus: "Let the same disposition be in you which was in Christ Jesus."(Philippians 2:5 WNT). By disposition, he is talking about a mindset, a worldview, a tendency to do something; temper or natural constitution of the mind; an inclination of the mind, a propensity, the way your mind is framed, disposed and arranged. A mindset. He says, the way your mind should work is exactly as that of Christ Jesus. And no one should be able to change that. If you remember Christ so well you will not be quick to forget that He was challenged many times to change the way He thought. He was beaten for it. He was rejected for it. They spat on Him and wanted to stone Him all because of the way His mind was set. His thoughts were not conformed to the expectations of his contemporaries who claimed to worship God but couldn't see that God was right in front of them.
They could not change Him. One beautiful and remarkable thing to notice about Jesus is the fact that He did not attend, even once, the schools of the Pharisees, the Sadducees, the Herodians or whatever other schools were present in His time on earth. As such they could claim nothing from Him, to say that what He knew was all that they taught Him. Faced with this challenge they therefore sought to find something wrong with His worldview and teachings so that by pointing it out they will prove Him to be false and eventually put an end to His ministry. They tried to make Him think and reason the same way they did, but to no avail.
"And on the Sabbath He began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished, saying, "Where did this man get these things? What is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty works done by his hands?" (Mark 6:2 ESV).
They were perplexed and bewildered by this young Charismatic Jewish Teacher Whom they thought they knew. "...Do you know Me, and do you know where I am from?..." (John 7:28 AMP) Of course they did not know Jesus.
Further Scripture Reading:
Timothy 4:12 ESV "Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity."
Timothy 3:10 ESV "You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness."
"Have this mind in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:"
(Philippians 2:5 ASV)
